Framing calculator for a stud wall: studs at 16 on center, plates, headers and the lumber list they add up to, worked on a 12 foot wall

Updated

A framing calculator turns a wall's length, height and openings into a lumber list: the studs at the spacing chosen, the plates, the corners and partition backers, the headers, jacks and cripples at each opening, and the blocking. The stud calculator is the part everyone knows and everyone rounds wrong, because the count at 16 inches on center is the length in feet times 0.75 plus one for the end, and then the extras at every corner and opening are added, not averaged. This page works a 12-foot wall and a 2x6 exterior wall with a window, says what the carpenter calculator adds for headers and plates, and points at the free construction cost estimator on this site that carries the lumber list into the estimate at your own rates, with no account.

The stud calculator: how many studs in a 12 foot wall

At 16 inches on center, studs equals the wall length in feet times 0.75, plus one for the end stud, rounded up. A 12-foot wall is 12 times 0.75, 9, plus 1, so 10 studs in the run. At 24 inches on center it is 12 times 0.5 plus 1, 7. Then the extras: two more studs at each corner for a three-stud corner, a backer where a partition meets the wall, and the framing at each opening, which the next section works. A 12-foot wall with one corner and one door is therefore 10 plus 2 plus the door's 2 king studs, 2 jacks and the cripples above, around 16 pieces of stud stock, and a wall stud calculator that returns 10 has counted the run and nothing else.

Plates, headers, jacks and cripples: what the wall stud calculator leaves out

Every wall has a bottom plate and a double top plate, three lengths of plate stock per wall length: a 12-foot wall needs 36 feet of plate, three 12-foot pieces. Each opening has a header sized for its span and the load above it, two king studs running full height, two jack studs under the header, cripples above the header at the stud spacing, and for a window, a sill with cripples below it. The American Wood Council publishes the span tables headers and joists are sized from; the framing calculator takes the opening's width and the header depth the contractor chooses and counts the pieces. A 3-foot window in the 12-foot wall adds a header, a sill, 2 kings, 2 jacks and 4 cripples.

The 2x6 calculator: the exterior wall and its lumber list

A 2x6 wall is the same count in a deeper stud, with the plates and headers in 2x6 stock and the header often doubled with a spacer to the wall's depth. On a 24-foot exterior wall at 16 inches on center with two corners and two 3-foot windows: 24 times 0.75 plus 1 is 19 studs in the run, 4 more at the corners, 8 kings and jacks, 2 headers, 2 sills and about 16 cripples, plus 72 feet of 2x6 plate. The 2x6 calculator returns that as a list by length, so the lumber order is in 8-, 10- and 12-foot pieces the yard sells, with the contractor's cut waste added; the APA covers the sheathing that follows on a separate page.

The carpenter calculator: from the list to the labor line and the estimate

The carpenter calculator online is the framing calculator with the contractor's own rates behind it: the lumber list at the yard's prices, the labor at the contractor's rate per linear foot of wall or per square foot of floor, and the sheathing and fasteners as their own lines. On the worked exterior wall, the lumber at the yard's price, the labor at the contractor's rate for 24 feet of 2x6 wall with two openings, and the nails and hangers, added and marked up at the contractor's overhead and profit, is the framing line in the estimate. The free construction cost estimator on this site carries that line at your own cost per square foot with contingency and overhead and profit shown, and the schedule of values carries it as the framing's value for the draw.

Questions people ask about framing calculator

How many studs are in a 12 foot wall?

At 16 inches on center, 10 in the run (12 times 0.75 plus 1), then the extras: 2 more per corner, a backer per partition, and 2 kings, 2 jacks and the cripples at each opening. With one corner and one door, around 16 pieces of stud stock.

What does a framing calculator include beyond studs?

Three plates per wall length, headers sized from the span tables, king and jack studs, cripples and sills at openings, corners, partition backers and blocking, as a lumber list by length with the contractor's cut waste.

Is a 2x6 calculator different from a 2x4 one?

Same counts in deeper stock: 2x6 plates and studs, and headers built to the wall's depth. On a 24-foot exterior wall with two windows, 19 studs in the run plus about 30 pieces at corners and openings, and 72 feet of plate.
