Stud calculator: how many studs in a 12 foot wall, a 20 foot wall and any wall at 16 or 24 on center, before corners and openings

Updated

A stud calculator answers one question a framer asks at the lumber yard: how many studs does this wall take. The arithmetic is short, the wall length in feet times 0.75 plus one at 16 inches on center, and everything that goes wrong with it goes wrong in what the short version leaves out: the studs a corner takes, the extra studs an opening takes for its jack and king, the partition backers, and the waste a crew actually produces. This page works the count on three walls, a 12 foot wall, a 20 foot wall and a wall with a window and a door, at both common spacings, and says where each extra stud comes from. The construction cost estimator on this site turns the count into a priced line at your own lumber price.

The base count: length times 0.75 plus 1, or times 0.5 plus 1

At 16 inches on center a stud lands every 1.333 feet, so a wall's length in feet times 0.75 gives the spacing count, and one more closes the far end: a 12 foot wall is 9 plus 1, ten studs in the run. At 24 on center the factor is 0.5, so the same wall is 6 plus 1, seven. The count is rounded up before the one is added, because a wall that ends between layouts still needs a stud at its end. A 20 foot wall at 16 on center is 15 plus 1, sixteen; at 24 it is 10 plus 1, eleven. This is the count for a straight run with nothing in it, and it is what a stud calculator that stops here reports. Real walls have corners and openings, which is where the next two sections add to it.

Corners, intersections and the studs they add

A wall does not stand alone. Each outside corner takes two or three studs beyond the run count, depending on the corner detail the framer uses: a three-stud corner adds two beyond the end stud already counted, a two-stud corner with drywall clips adds one. Each place an interior partition meets the wall takes a backer for the partition's drywall, commonly two studs or a stud with a ladder block, adding one or two. So the 12 foot wall with a corner at each end and one partition meeting it is the ten from the run plus four for the corners plus two for the backer, sixteen studs. A stud calculator that ignores corners is short by a quarter on a short wall, and the shortfall shows on the day the crew runs out.

Openings: what a window and a door each add

An opening removes the common studs inside it and adds framing around it: a king stud each side running full height, a jack stud each side under the header, and cripples above the header and below a window sill. A 3 foot door in the 20 foot wall removes the two common studs inside it and adds two kings and two jacks, a net of two; a 4 foot window removes three commons and adds two kings, two jacks and roughly two cripples above and two below, a net of five. So the 20 foot wall at 16 on center with one door and one window is sixteen from the run, plus two for the door, plus five for the window, twenty-three, before corners. The header stock is a separate line, sized to the span, and the wood handbook linked below covers the species and grade side of that choice.

Waste, the lumber list and the price

Framers add waste, and the count that goes to the yard is the count from the wall plus a share for crooked stock, cut-offs and the stud that gets used as a brace. On this site's worked walls the estimator adds a stated waste share and prints the result as a line: studs, plates at two bottom-plus-top runs of the wall length, headers by the opening, all at your own price per piece. That priced line is what a stud calculator is for; the count alone is a number on a scrap of paper. The construction cost estimator on this site takes the wall length, the spacing, the corners and the openings and produces the lumber list and its price, and DrawScheduleWorks Pro keeps it against the job so the framing line on the estimate is the framing line on the draw.

Questions people ask about stud calculator

How many studs are in a 12 foot wall?

Ten in the run at 16 inches on center, twelve times 0.75 rounded up plus one, before corners and openings. With a corner at each end and a partition meeting it, sixteen. At 24 on center the run is seven.

What does the stud calculator add for a window?

Two king studs, two jack studs and cripples above the header and below the sill, less the common studs the opening removes. On a 4 foot window at 16 on center the net is about five studs; on a 3 foot door, two.

Does the count include plates and headers?

No. Plates are a separate line, two or three runs of the wall length; headers are sized to each opening's span. The construction cost estimator on this site prints all three as priced lines from one wall description.
